OUR SERVICES

Residential

The people with special needs supported at COC decide with their teams what living arrangement best suits their individual needs, and are encouraged to be as independent as possible. Individual rooms express the tastes and preferences of the occupants. Our staff members, called Living Skills Advisors, are encouraged to be a partner, not a parent, and to be a supporter, not a server. Our staff also provide guidance and support with a Christian emphasis in accordance with our values. They give opportunity for devotional times and facilitate attendance at local churches, including worship services and Bible study groups.

Depending on the program, various other support services, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, recreational therapy, and nursing services, among others, are available.

Intermediate Care Facility for Persons with Mental Retardation (ICF/MR)
These programs provide intense support and training to people with severe disabilities who need 24-hour supervision and support, while adhering to the principle of active treatment. The program is highly regulated and supports people with significant intellectual disabilities. We have programs in the Pella/Knoxville and Indianola/Des Moines regions.

Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS)
These programs provide training and support to help people develop independent living skills while living in shared homes. Residents share common living areas, laundry facilities and bathrooms, though they have their own individual rooms. We have HCBS homes in the Indianola/Des Moines and the Pella/Knoxville regions, one of which is designated a retirement home, and is staffed to support aging residents.

Broadway Apartments Supported Community Living (BA-SCL)
At the Broadway Apartments in Pella, 15 adults live in either single- or double-occupancy apartments. These residents are able to complete many daily tasks with only minimal staff support.

Supported Community Living (SCL)
This program is for those people who have independent living skills and can live on their own or with their families, and need only occasional assistance. A Living Skills Advisor meets with them weekly to assist them with tasks such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, shopping, appointments, social skills, and problem solving.
